Spotted on an escalator in the heart of town in Singapore. It’s probably in reference to Induni ‘09 a one-wheeled tour of the region that, actually, takes place right as you’re reading this. The official description of the tour reads:
Our tour takes us to the north east of India to a fantastically diverse region that borders Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and China, each of them never more than 100 miles away. This diversity is reflected in both the landscape, which ranges from the steaming plains near Bangladesh, to the world’s 3rd highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, but it is also evident in the people and religions we’ll see. Bengali teapickers, Bhutanese religious sculptors, Nepali corn vendors and Tibetan prayer flags are all to be found at this confluence of cultures.
All this contrast makes for plenty of legwork, and starting in the plains, we’ll work our way up through to the foothills until we’re close enough to the snow-capped peaks of Sikkim that it’ll feel like we can just reach out and touch them.
Reminder for all you one-wheelers who’ve yet to sign up for The Event of The Year. Unicon XV is happening from December 28 – Jan 7 in Wellington New Zealand and the early bird rates end April 1. Join as a competitor for the races or trials and freestyle competitions or as a participant in the workshops that’s expected to happen.
Can’t ride a unicycle? There’s 9 more months for you to pick it up!
Wired Magazine has a blurb this month about the 36″ Coker unicycles calling the giant unicycles the most dangerous object in the office. They’re obviously wrong of course. As someone who’s experienced in such matters, I’d award the title to the Impossible Wheel. Those things and office desks are not a good combination.
Unicycle.ca has collected a team of riders. They are -
Athena White
Justin Kohse
Daniel Cormeau
Hugo Duguay
Eric Evenchick
Nicolas Fillion
Émile Mathieu-Bégin
Bryan Corry
Dave Cox
Congratulations goes out to them and we’re looking forward to new videos. They’ve a team blog here which you can check for news and the bios of the riders too.
Well, kinda but certainly the most expensive per square inch.
Made of Titanium for a 20″ wheel, this weighs only 1.35 lbs complete with seat clamp. It will never rust or corrode and is tough enough for trials. In English for non-unicyclists, that means that it doesn’t wreak even if you’re attempting a 10 foot hop off a stone pillar. Maybe.
Here’s a trailer for the Durham Juggling Convention DVD. An excerpt from producer, Nathan Rae states
Footage on this DVD includes mad skills and people juggling in the main
hall, the games, a sample of the workshops, the unicycle hall and more.
It also includes a full hours worth of the show selected from all 11 acts
plus some of the best (or worst) jokes from the compere!
It’s a huuuuge file at 150mb but if you’re looking forward to a recap of the convention, it’s worth the wait.
Kris Holm Unicycles has a grant for all you adventure unicyclists out there. Set up as a means to support mountain unicycling enthusiasts with a desire to ride in remote regions, the grant offers CAD1700, a Kris Holm Single Speed Unicycle, a set of guards and gloves as well as up to three additional Kris Holm unis at wholesale cost.
While not as glamorous as grants for two-wheeled adventures, you’ll probably get from it a more exhilarating experience ANYTIME. This year’s awards went to a team from the US and Canada who’re heading to Panama. They’ll be setting off sometime in January and we’ll be filling you in on their progress then.
In the meantime, if you’re interested in trying out for next year’s awards, head over to Kris Holm Unicycles.
Hilarious subtitling and hey, is that a unicycle I spot in the corner of the room? I’ve no idea what they’re saying but I’m going to trust that the translation’s accurate. It has to be.
