Best Catches — Week of 7 June ‘09

June 14th, 2009 | Posted by tony

Best Catches is a sifter for the unplugged, the lazy, and the busy. It’s a weekly roundup of the freshest juggling videos, forum topics, and blog posts – in short, it does a lot of work so you don’t have to.

I thought this week would be tough to pick the first BC listing. Japanese Jugglers 3 made it easy.

:: Japanese Jugglers 3, filmed in May in Tokyo, shows how little the rest of the world has left to offer to the Japanese juggling culture. Of course, you’d never get that attitude from these jugglers, as they are always gung ho to share. This video is a great snapshot — obviously recorded in just a few sessions — of these jugglers.

:: Greetings from Germany features 30 diabolists from Germany, Austria and Italy. And the video features the ultimate one-hit wonder song, “Your Woman,” by White Town. The album is so terrible, but that song is so good. The only proof that the album ever sold was that I found a copy at a used CD store, which I bought before learning of its atrociousness. For more information on the video visit diabolotreff.de.

Do you ever get the sense that the art vs. sport distinction is silly if applied to diabolo? Every time I see a diabolist these days, he’s jamming pretty and technical.

:: Ofek Shilton shows a few gnarly diabolo tricks.

:: In case you missed him, Eric Bates is the best living box juggler. If not the best ever.

:: If you like watching Steve and Leif pass clubs, here’s some more.

:: Pavel Evsukevich #5.

:: Emile Carey & Marie-Claude Chamberland are promoting a new show. I won’t say much, but Emile isn’t rocking many tricks we haven’t seen before.

Best Catches — Week of 3 May ‘09

Best Catches is a sifter for the unplugged, the lazy, and the busy. It’s a weekly roundup of the freshest juggling videos, forum topics, and blog posts – in short, it does a lot of work so you don’t have to.

The one week in which I’m traveling during normal Best Catches posting time is the week when online juggling content spikes. Never fear. Three days late and bulging at the seems:

:: The Magic Club Project, apparently cooked up by a Mr. Bunglebanks, is a chain mail video project with promise. One club travels from juggling group to group and featured in a short movie on the way. Here’s the latest video by The National Prestigious Society of Collegiate Jugglers’.

:: I like just about everything but the socks in this video by Hagen Buchner. Crisp three-ball juggling and an identifiable physicality to his club juggling. According to the video uploader, Hagen studied at the circus school “Etage” in Berlin before going to cirkus cirkor in Stockholm in 2003 and is now living in Frankfurt.

:: Pavel Evsukevich juggles giant balls and lots of rings and does so with fun flair. Watch for his little touches on otherwise technically demanding juggling. The video kept my attention straight through.

:: The Ministry of Manipulation is pointing to some interesting stuff lately, including The Ball Passing Project and the especially endearing Candy Popie.

:: CLUB JUGGLING: Bobbo keeps getting better (3c through 6c). Club Motion (Kevin Axtell and Co.) has gotten more convincing too. I like their Humboldt Juggling Festival 2009 performance clips.

:: Thom juggles. Sarafian juggles.

:: Laura Ernst and Marco Paoletti have new videos up.
