Best Catches — Week of 19 April ‘09

April 25th, 2009 | Posted by tony

Best Catches is a sifter for the unplugged, the lazy, and the busy. It’s a weekly roundup of the freshest juggling videos, forum topics, and blog posts – in short, it does a lot of work so you don’t have to.

In posting this time, I feel like the once-per-week format is almost too slow. I have no intention of changing the frequency at the moment, but in organizing the links that follow, I’m feeling inclined to list the most recently posted items first. Perhaps it doesn’t matter. Please comment and send feedback as to how you are reading Best Catches. Thanks.

:: Fergus asks for help as he prepares to teach an autism juggling workshop. The ensuing advice is interesting and might benefit if Street Juggling readers have any input. Beware as well though, because Sondre is, as usual, and offensive ass.

:: Marden’s Juggling Competition continues. Vids here.

:: Shuniti Kobayashi busts big numbers and pirouette tricks with balls.

:: Patrik, Wes, and Joe pass 15 clubs as some sort of teaser.

:: Sport Juggling Co. ball prices are set to increase May 1, apparently. Forum topic here.

:: I’ve neglected to mention Luke Burrage’s blog recently. His recent post about the multi-person club patterns of Jochen, Jochen and Flo is interesting, informative, and includes some nice photos. Related video is embedded there, or here.

:: Nathan Rae continues his video experimentation with a slow-mo film shot during Manchester University Juggling Club. Shot at 100fps, Nathan says. Vimeo vid here.

:: Edit: IJA has a 10-part series of festival teaser videos up now. It’s pretty passable except for demonstrating the IJA’s recent efforts. Mini review:

Part 1: general overview w/ rehashed montage
Part 2: Gimmicky, but enjoyable if you know Chris.
Part 3: Feels out of place, but includes Dietz action.
Part 4: Nothing especially new.
Part 5: Non-verbal montage. Josiah is sweet.
Part 6: A skit.
Part 7: Kind of like #2.
Part 8: Montage of fun festival stuff. I hadn’t seen these clips before.
Part 9: Kevin Axtell
Part 10: Features Laura Ernst.

Best Catches — Week of 22 Feb. ‘09

March 1st, 2009 | Posted by tony

Best Catches is a sifter for the unplugged, the lazy, and the busy. It’s a weekly roundup of the freshest juggling videos, forum topics, and blog posts – in short, it does a lot of work so you don’t have to.

:: Early in the week Chilean juggler Alvaro Palominos put out a pretty comprehensive video of his skills, ranging from cool stuff to impressive numbers juggling.

:: A fine “non-juggling” video made it to the forum this week. Watch Boyanka Angelova and her one-ball rhythmic gymnastics routine. Previous rhythmic gymnastics on the web: (1) and (2).

:: Anthony Gatto makes some sort of point; also juggles.

:: Contribute to a discussion on the worst stage names.

:: Ania Belley raises a few things in forum talk. You decide.

:: Luke Burrage discusses double-ended clubs, then plays with them and with friends. Worth a glance at least, maybe at most.

:: And in a busy web juggling week, a few more worth mentioning: cool new Norbi tricks; CJ Smith 5-club Mill’s Mess; Shoebox Tour Finland trailer (jugglers not juggling), and more jugglers doing some juggling and a lot of dancing in a Turbo Fest 2009 vid.

:: The Juggling Pug is a children’s book out since April.

:: Ville Walo and Kalle Hakkarainen are rocking the prettiest new site.

:: Ben Thompson gives a heads up to videos by Mark Kolbusz, a Chicagoland juggler and IJA silver medalist. Thompson is right, these videos have been under the radar.

:: Oskar Wrango enters a rec.juggling post hinting at a new video (with only a hint of ego).

:: Rec.juggling writers manage to squeeze 9+ responses out of a post about this instructional video.

:: Niels and Malte post a live routine video of their well received partner routine, previously posted in subway format.

:: The Average Joggler connects to Canadian jogglers.

:: Reeses talks WJF and the value of the Mess.

:: Karas ponders ring kick-ups.

:: Everyone is chatting about Toby Walker’s street performance.

:: Laido Dittmar posts a new video. Contents: Good skills, nothing too fresh, a bit long. Mostly clubs and rings. Nice four-club sequence at about 5:20.

:: Speculation about the WJF appearing on the Colbert Report.

:: Tiff and Josh make some catches.
